The Arturia MiniFreak 49 is a hybrid synthesizer designed for detailed sound design, expressive performance, and production. Its two digital engines offer over 30 oscillator modes, giving you a broad foundation for creating your own patches.

MiniFreak 49 gives you two digital sound engines, six voices, and more than 30 oscillator modes, so you can build patches using a broad range of synthesis methods. Virtual Analog, FM, granular, wavetable, and sample options give you plenty of starting points, with dedicated shortcuts providing quick access to synth, wavetable, and sample engines.
Engine 2 can process Engine 1 for more involved sound design. You can also route external audio through the voice architecture. Each voice has its own analog state-variable filter, with low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass modes, self-oscillating resonance, and audio-rate FM modulation of the cutoff.
The XYZ touch matrix brings several important controls together on one multitouch surface, helping you spend less time navigating and more time shaping sounds. Its Modulation Matrix mode provides direct, colour-coded assignments across engines, filters, effects, and modulators.
Preset Browsing displays complete pages of sounds that you can navigate with a swipe, while Visualizer mode responds to your playing with preset-selected animations. Freak Control opens up hands-on manipulation using Macros, Gate, Spice, bipolar, and vector layouts. These fields are pre-mapped across the synth, and you can latch a useful position once you find the sound you want.
There’s plenty here for creating evolving sounds, rhythmic modulation, and animated stereo patches. Two LFOs offer selectable waveforms, free or synchronised operation, shape editing, randomisation, and direct matrix drawing. A polyphonic cycling envelope adds Run and Loop modes and can operate at audio rate, extending your modulation options further.
Three effect slots each provide 13 algorithms for processing your finished patches. Voice Panning adds another dimension by positioning individual voices across the stereo field using selectable spread algorithms. Combined with stereo outputs, this lets chords, sequences, and layered sounds occupy a wider, more active stereo image.
The 49 full-size semi-weighted keys use Arturia’s KeyLab mk3 49/61 keybed design, giving you velocity and mono aftertouch for expressive control. Aluminium pitch and modulation wheels provide familiar hands-on performance tools, while the larger OLED display keeps visual information close by.
For pattern creation, the sequencer includes four modulation tracks, while the arpeggiator supports octave jumps, ratchets, and repeats. Spice & Dice lets you introduce variation and randomisation to patterns during performance. MiniFreak V is also included, providing DAW integration and preset management. Hardware presets load on MiniFreak 49, helping your software and physical setup work closely together.
