The Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms Foundation 4 is one of the most comprehensive and powerful analog modular synthesizers on the market. The Foundation 4 is not just a combination of existing modules, rather each modular unit has been specifically designed and developed together to work in unison. The result is a highly versatile modular synthesizer, housed in a portable enclosure that is ideal for live performances as well as studio work. At the heart of the synthesizer are dual oscillators, complete with a wide variation of waveforms and modulation control. It boasts three resonant filters and a pair of four-stage envelopes as well as MIDI connectivity. The Foundation 4 Synthesizer takes your sound design and synthesis capabilities to the next level, providing unparalleled control for all your parameters and patch points.
The Foundation 4 produces rich harmonics, ideal for east-coast style subtractive synthesis. The wide range of modulation options, filtering and envelopes allows you to achieve everything from dirty funk basslines to airy pad like sounds. The Double Helix Dual Oscillator provides modular waveforms, ranging from the standard sawtooth, sub, pulse, sine and square to the custom ‘Blade’ waveform. Allowing you to blend between waveforms results in some really interesting results, thanks to the voltage controlled shape contouring and deep modulation. The performance ready design provides you with a wide range of control including a dynamic impulse low pass gate, modulation section with an LFO and even a noise source. The integrated MIDI control can be patched to create mono or duophonic synthesizer voices. It even features an onboard arpeggiator for creating complex rhythms and patterns.
As well as providing subtractive synthesis capabilities, the Foundation 4 synthesizer system can utilise the same principle of West Coast synthesis. You can achieve FM, non-linear waveshaping; allowing you to low pass gate drive the synthesizer into the west coast style. The wide range of modular options includes an additional lowpass gate, VC multi-function generator, random generator and a range of other utility modules for taking your sound into the next level. The result is rich harmonics that allow you to achieve virtually any sound you can think of. The experimentation options are endless thanks to the wide range of utility modules, patch points and parameters.
Designed as an expandable analog modular synthesizer, the Foundation 4 is ideal for both live performance and studio work. It comes housed in the EP-208 Professional Eurorack Case and is comprised of 12 individual modules in total. It features dedicated outputs as well as binary filters, a dynamic impulse filter, MIDI connectivity and modulation tools, as well as a 2+2 mixer for optimal flexibility. The EP-208 case itself can be folded away with patch cables still attached, meaning you can go to live performances with your sounds and patches ready to go. The exterior of the case features a hand-stained hardwood finish that not only looks sleek but helps to protect your modules while on the move. The case also features 104HP of additional space so you can expand and customise your system with other modules.
